A MULTIDIMENSIONAL CRISIS

In Burkina Faso, West Africa, one of the world’s most impoverished nations, access to clean water remains a daily struggle.

More than 63% of people lack access to safe drinking water, and 88% live without basic sanitation services. Ongoing conflict and displacement, combined with climate-related droughts, are placing additional pressure on already fragile water systems. Burkina Faso urgently needs sustainable, community-led solutions to restore and build resilience.

The Problem: A Deepening Water Crisis in Burkina Faso

In rural Burkina Faso, more than 63% of people lack access to safe drinking water, and 88% live without basic sanitation services leading to preventable illnesses like diarrhea, which claims more than 4,000 young lives each year (WHO).

Meanwhile, over 5,769 wells are broken, many unusable for years due to a lack of repair and expertise in maintaining infrastructure. Climate change is making things worse, reducing rainfall and intensifying food insecurity for communities that rely heavily on agriculture. Ongoing conflict has displaced nearly 2 million people (UNHCR), adding pressure to already overstretched water systems.

“Women and girls usually have the responsibility of fetching water. This can be a dangerous, time-consuming and physically demanding task. Long journeys by foot, often more than once a day, can leave women and girls vulnerable to attack and often precludes them from school or earning an income.” – UN Water

Our Mission

Clean, accessible and sustainable water transforms everything.

Founded in 2015, the Georgie Badiel Foundation implements sustainable water projects in Burkina Faso that provide communities in need with clean drinking water.

We build and restore water projects, train women in basic engineering, build dignified & safe sanitation facilities, and educate and inspire a new generation of global water advocates.

Meet Georgie, “The Water Princess”

From a village to a global thought leader and humanitarian

“I used to walk 3 hours to fetch water for my family. My goal is to break that cycle.” – Georgie Badiel Liberty

Georgie Badiel Liberty was raised between Côte d’Ivoire and neighboring Burkina Faso. She spent much of her childhood waking very early to walk miles to fetch water. That daily journey shaped her future.

Today, Georgie is an author, model, entrepreneur, and humanitarian. Her childhood experience with water scarcity inspired The Water Princess, a bestselling children’s book that introduces young readers to the global water crisis and anchors our school-based education program.

In the Giving Spotlight: A New Way to Give

On the eve of World Water Day 2025 at the United Nations in New York, New Day Impact proudly launched a new giving platform, Inform, in partnership with the Georgie Badiel Foundation.

To celebrate this launch, a generous donor has pledged to match up to $5,000 in donations made through the platform. Every dollar matched brings us closer to building a new well in a rural village, where women currently walk miles each day just to access water.
